AnimalTrakker® Farm Desktop

WARNING: Beta versions may be unstable!

Linux Debian Distribution BETA:

AnimalTrakker® Farm Desktop is our companion program for AnimalTrakker® Farm Mobile. It can display and generate specialized reports from data collected in the field. You can use Farm Desktop to isolate, display, and report information about the flock, herd, or individuals. The reporting function also allows you to send data directly to veterinarians or buyers.

Information does not automatically sync between Farm Mobile and Farm Desktop – instead, it’s up to the user to decide which files to migrate between the programs. It’s a good idea to back up data from Farm Mobile to Farm Desktop on a regular basis in case of data loss, but how often this is done is entirely up to the user.

In the future, we hope to make it so you can use AnimalTrakker® Farm Desktop completely independently of Farm Mobile. Right now, Farm Mobile is your primary way of collecting and recording information on your animals, but it also provides a convenient way to access the program while out in the field. Once Farm Desktop is finished, if your desktop station is located close to your livestock – like in a dairy barn, for example – you may not see a need for Farm Mobile at all. However, Farm Desktop is still a work in progress, and at this time, its function is limited.

Eventually, we will have versions of Farm Desktop available for Macintosh, Linux, and Windows systems.

Running an AnimalTrakker® Registry

Farm Desktop has an optional Registry Package. Registry was created with small, rare-breed registries in mind, and it allows the tracking and management of the flocks and members within the registry. We can set up and manage your registry for you, or you can manage it on your own.

Registry has two separate programs that work together to provide a seamless experience for both registrar and member. These are Registry Desktop (for the registrar) and Registry Web (for registry members).

Registry Desktop is the operations hub for the registry owner. It allows you to document births, deaths, ownership transfers, matings, and other changes in an animal’s data. You can also use it to handle registry memberships, registration papers, member lists, flock books, and more. Finally, you can use Registry Desktop in combination with Farm Desktop to generate reports, interface with the database, and handle other functions within the system.

We created Registry Desktop because we’re rare livestock breeders ourselves. Rare breed registries are often smaller and run by volunteers. Maintaining a registry for a rare breed can be difficult, and our competitors’ managed registries can be prohibitively expensive. While AnimalTrakker® was designed with small registries in mind, it can support registries of many sizes and types.

Registry Web is the companion program to Registry Desktop. It’s a lightweight, browser-based program that remotely submits changes to your registry. Users can use it to submit animal deaths, births, and transfers of registered stock between members. The program also links these changes to the animal’s tag, location, and pedigree. It can facilitate transfers to official registrars, too. No official changes are made to the registry until the registrar approves them through Registry Desktop.

AnimalTrakker® Registry Desktop and Registry Web are open source. Registry Desktop is compatible with Windows, Macintosh, and Linux systems, and Registry Web is compatible with any browser – even on mobile.

Registry tasks are a superset of what any farmer does, but because all registries deal with animal documentation differently, a degree of customization is required. If you’re interested in setting up a registry, please contact us at [email protected].
